Tips for relocating to Cambridge

Relocating to Cambridge for a semester or year is exciting—but the logistics can be surprisingly complex. A few simple choices can make the transition much smoother.

First, prioritize location first. Living near Harvard Square, Central Square, or along the Red Line will dramatically simplify your daily routine. Cambridge is highly walkable, and many residents do not need a car.

Second, consider furnished housing. For 6–24 month stays, it eliminates the need to buy furniture, set up utilities, or manage multiple accounts. This is especially valuable if you’re arriving from out of state or internationally.

Third, plan for timing and seasonality. August and September are peak rental periods due to the academic calendar, so securing housing early is important.

Fourth, think about commute flexibility. Locations between Harvard and MIT offer the most optionality, whether you walk, bike, or take the subway.

Finally, give yourself time to settle in. Cambridge has distinct neighborhoods, each with its own character, and part of the experience is discovering what fits your routine.

With the right setup, your move can feel simple—and your time here well spent.
